Hi, everyone! As promised, I really want to continue to update you on Grace at the end of every month. February was a great month for Grace, as her sign language is really developing. She knows how to sign 'friend' and has met a few new and old friends in Feb, and every time she sees someone she signs friend. And in the evening when we talk about her day, she signs 'friend'. (you can see how to sign friend on youtube, but it's your two fore fingers interlocking, while you rotate your hands). Grace's signs are approximations of what the sign through ASL really is.. but this one she has down pat. If you know what the sign means, it's no mistaking that she is saying 'friend'.
How cool is that?! February vacation a past PCA and her daughter came to hang out with Grace for a couple of days. They visited the zoo and made a craft. Grace continuously signed 'friend'. It was great to have this person back, even if it was for only a couple of days. And to see the girls interact a few years later, I'm sure was a joy!
The month ended with my determination and vision for Grace to be socially involved in her home school by coordinating parties. Her Town home elementary school started after school programs for the children and Grace is a part of it. Currently, she will go two days a week, Monday & Thursdays for a five week session. She will use her walker for mobility and ipad if needed to communicate. (Our PCA will be with her with the plan to fade as Grace's peers become intrigued by her.. which I'm sure in no time, as children our..they will want to engage and help her; or that is my hope!). This program will also set her up for attending another 1/2 day program in the summer months. Grace is a very social child and it is so important for her & all children to shine where they are most comfortable.
As her parents, we want what's best for her..as any parent does for their children. And we want to get there by encouraging social interaction with other children, not just adults!
